Tax Preparation Resources

We know this time of year can be taxing, so let us ease your mind with some helpful tax preparation resources.

Below is a list of programs that may help you get your taxes done for FREE:

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - This program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, people with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Find a VITA site near you today. Note: Income thresholds vary for in-person tax preparation.

Free Tax Help for Military Families - The IRS provides free tax help to military members and their families through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. VITA offers free tax preparation and e-filing at sites both on and off base. Click here for more information.

The Fort Hood Tax Center (a Military VITA site) and office of the Staff Judge Advocate, III Corps and Fort Hood is located in Building 13 on Support Avenue between the CID and Sharp offices. For more information, contact the Tax Center at 254-287-3294 or by email.

SaveYourRefund - With $30,000 in prizes and 102 chances to win, SaveYourRefund gives Americans big incentives to save part of their tax refund. The promotion, now in its fourth year, is offered by America Saves and Commonwealth. Click here for more information.

Expecting a Refund?

If you're receiving a tax refund this year, we suggest the following:

  • Direct Deposit - With Direct Deposit, you can expedite your tax refund. There is no check to be lost or stolen, plus you can access your funds as soon as your tax refund posts.
  • Regular Savings Account - Consider using the extra money to create an emergency Regular Savings Account to help with any unexpected expenses in 2019.
  • Secured Mastercard® - Need to improve your credit? If so, you may consider setting aside a portion of your refund for a security deposit to open a Secured Mastercard credit card.
