MasterCard Gift Card FAQ

Who might like a card?
MasterCard® gift cards are the perfect gift for anyone! The gift card can be used anywhere MasterCard® is accepted.

Where can I purchase a card?
To purchase a gift card, simply visit your nearest branch. Use the Branch/ATM Locator conveniently located on our website for locations in your area.

What methods of payment do you accept to purchase a card?
Purchase a card by debiting the funds from your checking or savings account, or use cash to purchase your card.

Is there a limit to the amount I can load onto a gift card?
The minimum value of the card is $5, and the maximum amount is $1000.

How does the card work?
The gift card is a prepaid card. The purchaser determines the amount on the card at the time of purchase. The card can be used anywhere MasterCard® is accepted. Each time a purchase is made the balance is reduced by the purchase amount.

When should I use my card?
You can use your card immediately. If you do not use your card within the first year of receipt, an inactivity fee of $15 will be applied on the first day of the 13th month. This $15 fee will be applied every month the card remains inactive until the card balance reaches zero.

How do I know my card is ready to be used?
All cards are activated immediately at the time of purchase and can be used anywhere MasterCard® is accepted for the purchase of goods and services.

Do I need to register my card?
We encourage you to register your gift card immediately to establish a record of ownership. The gift card can be registered online here.

What is my verification code, and why do I need it?
The verification code is a 3-digit code that is located on the back of the card next to the signature panel. This verification code will be needed to access the online cardholder website and when requesting live agent support at 877-404-4834.

Can I use the gift card to make a purchase that is larger than the value on the card?
No. The available balance on the card is determined at the time of purchase. The available balance on the card can be determined by registering online through the cardholder website here or by calling customer support at 877-404-4834.

Is the gift card a credit card?
No. A gift card closely resembles a credit card; however, card holders do not have a line of credit. A recipient of a gift card can spend up to the value placed on the card by the purchaser.

Note: When making a purchase using a gift card select the "credit" or "signature" option on the merchant's terminal. These cards do not have a PIN (Personal Identification Number) that can be used for making debit purchases.

Are there limitations to where I can use my card?
The gift card cannot be used for gambling, to obtain cash at an ATM machine or to get cash back after a purchase. The card may not work when trying to make purchases online or via telephone which require that the card have a billing address.

Can I add funds to the card?
No. The card is not reloadable. The value of the card will be determined at the time of purchase. Cards are available from $5 - $1000.

What are the fees for the card?

  • Purchase Fee: $2 each
  • Inactivity Fee: Cards with no activity for twelve (12) months will be charged a monthly inactivity fee equal to $15.00.* The inactivity fee is a monthly fee charged against any unused available balance of the card each month, beginning on the 1st day of the 13th month after the date of last activity and continuing on the first day of each month thereafter. The monthly $15.00 inactivity fee will be assessed and automatically deducted from the available balance of the card until the available balance of the card reaches $0.
  • Replacement Fee: $15
  • Cash-Out Fee: $15

Can I use my card outside the United States?
The gift card can be used anywhere MasterCard® is accepted. Please read the full MasterCard® Gift Card Terms and Agreement for a complete explanation of foreign currency transactions. Note the phone number for customer service will only work inside the U.S. 877-404-4834.

Are statements available for gift cards?
No. The current balance and purchase limit can be obtained by accessing the cardholder website or by calling customer support at 877-404-4834.

What if I need to return an item?
Merchants have their own return and exchange policies; please review these policies when making purchases. In some cases merchants require that the credit for the return be issued back onto the same card that was used to make the purchase, so retention of the card may be important to return merchandise.

Why do I sometimes have difficulty using my gift card at restaurants or gas pumps?
In some cases card purchases may be declined because the authorization amount exceeds the available balance of funds on the card or exceeds the final transaction amount of the purchase. The reason for this difference is that the merchant may not know the final amount of the transaction at the time the card is used. The difference is typical at merchants like restaurants and salons where tips are customary. When using the card at a merchant where a tip is included your authorization amount may be for 20% over the normal purchase amount. Purchases made at a "pay at the pump" gas station may authorize up to $75 or more even if your purchase amount is less, which reduces the overall available amount on the card.

Does the card have an expiration date?
The funds do not expire. The date noted on the front of the Card is the date through which the use of the card is valid. This date is required to ensure that the card can be used with merchants that request and/or require customers to provide a card expiration date during the transaction process. You may not use the card after the valid through date.

What happens if there are funds on the card after it has expired?
If you still have available funds on the card after the valid through date has passed, you may contact us at 877-404-4834 and we will issue a replacement card to you at no charge.

If you do not register your card, then three years after the date the card was purchased it will be canceled, and any unused balance will be handled according to the applicable unclaimed property law. Please review the MasterCard® Gift Card Terms and Agreement for further information.

Note: Monthly inactivity fees may consume the card balance; a $15 fee is applied every month following 12 consecutive months of inactivity.

What happens if I lose my card?
Immediately report a card as lost or stolen by calling 877-404-4834, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. You can request a replacement card at any time.

Note: A replacement card fee of $15 may apply.

Can I dispute suspicious transactions on my gift card?
You have the opportunity to dispute errors. Please review the MasterCard® Gift Card Terms and Agreement for instructions on the process. Contact customer support by calling 877-404-4834.
